Warner Bros. Unveils First Trailer for Bong Joon-ho’s “Mickey 17” Starring Robert Pattinson
MANILA, Philippines — Warner Bros. has released the highly anticipated first trailer for “Mickey 17,” the latest film from acclaimed director Bong Joon-ho, known for his Oscar-winning hit “Parasite.”
The trailer opens with Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, performing routine tasks outside a spaceship when a sudden accident slices off his hand. It is soon revealed that Mickey is an “expendable”—a disposable worker who is regenerated with most of his memories intact after each death.
As the trailer progresses, viewers see clips of this regeneration process, accompanied by a voiceover stating, “Every time you die, we learn something new and humanity moves forward.” The film injects humor into the grim scenario, showing a live version of Mickey willingly incinerating himself to expedite the process.
The action intensifies on an icy planet, featuring Steven Yeun’s character, Berto, who remarks on Mickey’s repeated deaths. The plot thickens when Mickey finds another version of himself in his bed, leading to a situation known as “multiples.” Mark Ruffalo’s character, Hieronymous Marshall, explains that in such cases, all individuals must be exterminated.
The trailer showcases the star-studded cast, including Pattinson, Yeun, Ruffalo, Naomi Ackie, and Toni Collette. It humorously highlights different versions of Mickey before revealing the title card.
“Mickey 17,” based on Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel, reunites Joon-ho with cinematographer Darius Khondji, editor Yang Jin-mo, and composer Jung Jae-il. Initially set for an earlier release, the film was delayed due to Hollywood strikes and post-production issues. Its release date was replaced by “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.”
“Mickey 17” is set to premiere in South Korea on January 28, 2025, and will hit Philippine cinemas nationwide on January 29, 2025. Watch the trailer on Warner Bros. Philippines’ YouTube channel.
