CHITO Victolero pointed to Magnolia’s second quarter meltdown as the turning point of Game 1 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals against San Miguel.
The Hotshots were outscored by the Beermen during that stretch, 41-20, behind the outside shooting of import Bennie Boatwright, Marcio Lassiter, Don Trollano, and Terrence Romeo, turning around a four-point deficit to a 61-44 lead at the halftime break.
San Miguel rode behind that huge scoring run to survive a last ditch rally by Magnolia and pull off a 103-95 win at the Mall of Asia Arena.
“That’s too much,” said Victolero when asked what went wrong for the Hotshots in the series opener.
“I think we lost that one quarter. Akala ko nga worst na yung Phoenix na 33 (points),” he added, referring to the 33 third quarter points the Hotshots gave up against the Phoenix Fuel Masters in Game 3 of their semifinals series which Magnolia lost, 103-85.
The top seeded Hotshots were actually doing great in the first 12 minutes where they held a 24-20 edge heading to the second quarter against the Beermen.
Then suddenly they run to a brick wall.
“We’ll try to watch the film, tingnan naming kung ano yung adjustment, what went wrong in that quarter,” said Victolero,
Despite the loss, the Magnolia coach believes the title series remains a wide-open race especially after seeing how his third group of players led by Joseph Eriobu, Russel Escoto, Aris Dionisio, and Jed Mendoza brought the Hotshots back in the endgame and threatened the Beermen at 100-95 with 1:13 left, only for the rally to fall short.
“This is a series, not a do-or-die game,” said Victolero. “We’ll try to apply adjustments, mga mali namin titignan namin. “We played very good defense in the second half, and titignan namin kung ano pang puwedeng gawin doon.” (RG)
