PENDING the result of the Barangay Ginebra-NLEX tussle Saturday, TNT targets either an outright quarterfinals passage or a playoff crack at No. 8 in playing its final game in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup elims at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig Sunday.
It’s a critical match for the Tropang Giga where they will be up against the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters who will be playing for final placing in the Top 4.
Should the Road Warriors prevail over the Gin Kings in their road showdown in Legazpi, Albay, it would be a knockout game for coach Jojo Lastimosa and his Tropang Giga.
Game time is at 6:30 p.m. with coach Jamike Jarin and his troops trying to grab the second seeding in the playoffs behind No. 1 Magnolia.
A victory over TNT would accomplish the mission for the Fuel Masters and their workhorse of an import in Johnathan Williams III. But a loss would mean relegation to No. 3 or even No. 4.
As there’s the possibility of a four-way tie among Phoenix, San Miguel Beer, Meralco and Ginebra at 8-3.
In such scenario, San Miguel will be the best team in the tiebreaker with plus 44 differential points, Ginebra second with minus four, next is Phoenix with minus six then Meralco minus 34. The Bolts will then settle for fifth seeding and a twice-to-win disadvantage in the quarters.
But it would automatically be Magnolia, Phoenix, San Miguel and Meralco composing the Top 4 should NLEX beat Ginebra.
In the same scenario where the Road Warriors is to beat the Kings, the Tropang Giga will be pushed to the wall, needing a win over the Fuel Masters to force a knockout setto for No. 8 versus coach Frankie Lim’s NLEX team.
On the other hand, a loss by NLEX to Ginebra will give TNT a shot at an outright quarterfinals passage.
The sure thing is TNT and Phoenix need the game badly.
And they’re expected to figure in an all-out duel in the closing match of the single-round-robin elims that started back on Nov. 5 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
In the race to the quarters, only the last spot is to be determined, and it’s a dispute between TNT and NLEX, teams tied at 4-6 at posting time.(SB)
