AN elims sweep for San Miguel Beer or an outright playoff entry for Meralco.
Stakes are high and fierce battle is expected as the Beermen and the Bolts clash in a road showdown in Batangas City in the penultimate play date of the PBA Philippine Cup elimination round Saturday.
San Miguel coach Jorge Gallent insists they’re taking it one game at a time, one step at a time and one ladder at a time, and not thinking about a sweep.
Whatever, they’re in a position to hit 11-0. And to come with it would be momentum they could ride on going to the post-elims play.
The Bolts, meanwhile, are in a must-win situation at 5-5. A win gives them an automatic passage into the quarters while a loss brings them down to a tie for eighth spot.
A possible heavy jam at eighth at the close of the elims Sunday may ensue and may relegate the Bolts to a knockout playoff for the last quarterfinals berth.
And thus a Saturday scorcher looms in the San Miguel-Meralco setto at 6:15 p.m. at the Batangas City Coliseum.
“It’s not over yet. We still have the 11th step. It’s not over and I have to downplay it (sweep) because it hasn’t happened yet. If it happens then lucky for us but then we move on to our next ladder,” said Gallent.
In the next ladder, the Beermen pursue a drive to a season double, having won the Commissioner’s Cup with import Bennie Boatwright.
And no question, the Beermen are the heavy favorites versus the Bolts, a depleted team that lost another key stalwart in Aaron Black due to an ACL tear.
The Bolts’ 74-51 rout of the Magnolia Hotshots proved costly with the injury suffered by Black.
Before that, coach Luigi Trillo and his troops repulsed the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters, 82-76.(SB)
