On Sunday, RR Garcia nearly led the Phoenix Fuel Masters to a stunning comeback in the PBA Governors’ Cup, but NLEX held on for a 100-95 victory. Garcia, the veteran guard, scored 14 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter, rallying Phoenix from a 23-point deficit.
Despite their second consecutive loss, Garcia praised his team’s resilience. “We made a great comeback, but we just fell short,” said the 34-year-old former UAAP MVP.
Trailing 53-30 at halftime, Phoenix surged in the fourth quarter with Garcia’s clutch shooting. His four-point play with three minutes left briefly gave Phoenix a 93-89 lead. However, NLEX responded with a 7-0 run to reclaim the lead.
Garcia’s late basket cut the deficit to 96-95, but Robbie Herndon’s corner three sealed the win for NLEX. “Coach Jamike had great confidence in me, and I took over,” Garcia said.
Acknowledging the rising talent at Phoenix, Garcia sees his role as crucial both on and off the court. “If needed, I’ll step up and lead,” he added.
