PHOENIX Super LPG and Meralco kick off their PBA Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals duel Wednesday with each protagonist knowing exactly what to do to win.
“We’re gonna work our butts off,” stated coach Jamike Jarin going to the 4 p.m. match at the PhilSports Arena that has his fourth-ranked Fuel Masters enjoying a win-once advantage over the fifth-seeded Bolts.
“We have to double our efforts. If they’re gonna come in at 100 percent, we should come in at 120,” Jarin also said.
“The key is for us to play playoff basketball,” countered Meralco’s Luigi Trillo. “We have to throw everything at them, pati kitchen sink, kumbaga.”
The winner of match goes on to face the victor of the other quarterfinals pairing between top-ranked Magnolia and eighth-seed TNT in the best-of-five semifinals.
Trillo and Jarin both don’t want to look that far ahead, with each focused on the immediate task.
Offering little comfort for Jarin is Phoenix’s 93-83 win over Meralco only last Jan. 10. “The thing is, they’ve got a lot of (playoffs) experience, and their backs are against the wall so they’re gonna come in really aggressive,” he pointed out.
“Ang maganda lang dito, we just played them a week ago so fresh pa lessons from that game,” added Jarin.
“They’re gonna make their adjustments, they’re gonna come in also with a different gameplan so it’s gonna be very interesting.”
Trillo maintains his team would not let his Bolts play catch-up from a 15-point deficit the Fuel Masters managed to erect early in that meeting.
“I think we’ll be better this time,” said Trillo. “We’ll handle them much better.”
Jarin is also obsessed with his players dishing off a much better performance than in a 96-116 loss to TNT last Sunday.
“Hopefully, we make our shots kasi (versus TNT) we struggled a bit from the field,” offered Jarin. “We also didn’t take care of the ball. So we have to take care of these things.” (NC)
