BY DOING the right things at the right time, Phoenix Super LPG managed to stay alive in its PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinal duel with Magnolia at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Fuel Masters intend to do a fitting follow-up when they meet the Hotshots anew for Game 4 of the best-of-five series at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the same Pasay City venue.
Phoenix foiled Magnolia’s bid for a clean sweep of the series and stayed alive when the latter pulled off a resounding 103-85 victory in Game 3 last Sunday.
Coach Jamike Jarin knows Magnolia would be coming out even stronger this time around than the last game when the Hotshots raced to a couple of early 21-point leads but failed to carry those home.
“They’re gonna watch the film and they’re gonna look at the things that didn’t work for them and worked for us. So they’re gonna counter that,” said Jarin, while largely crediting the win to his charges finally getting the job done in two key facets of the game.
“In the two games they won they had either more second-chance points or rebounding. Last time we were able to control both of those things,” ,” explained Jarin while believing his players have amply prepared.
“We’re gonna look for that and they’re gonna pound themselves inside so we have to be ready for that,” stated Jarin. “And they’re gonna come in with a lot of physicality.”
Indeed, the Fuel Masters were plus-8 in rebounding and plus-20 in second-chance points in Game 3 to complement their tough-as-nails defense that has already been on full display in the first two games they lost by an average of 3.5 points.
“Those first two games could have gone either way,” noted Jarin.
Both Jason Perkins and veteran team captain RJ Jazul know some other traits of their Phoenix team must again come to the fore if it hopes to survive a second straight knockout game and forge a deciding match on Friday.
“We (now) know what to do in the endgame,” said Perkins. “We just need to execute, get organized, rebound, and play defense.”
For his part, Jazul stressed team play. “Like what Coach said in the locker room, we’ll do it together. Di lang kay J3 (Johnathan Williams), di lang kay Jason,” he said. “We’re here together. Everyone is important.” (NC)
