PBA Season 49 Kicks Off with Historic MVP Race and Exciting Opening Night Matchup
The much-anticipated PBA Season 49 opening at Smart Araneta Coliseum this Sunday promises a thrilling start, with a historic MVP showdown among June Mar Fajardo, Christian Standhardinger, and CJ Perez. One of these basketball stars is set to make history as the league’s MVP, with Fajardo aiming to secure his eighth Most Valuable Player title—unless Standhardinger or Perez garners enough votes to claim the prestigious Leo Awards honor.
All three are expected to secure spots in the First Mythical Selection, another highlight of the annual awards ceremony, which starts at 4 p.m., followed by the season’s official opening. PBA Chairman Ricky Vargas will inaugurate the new season, leading up to a high-stakes clash between Meralco Bolts and Magnolia Hotshots at 7:30 p.m.

PBA veterans, including Justin Brownlee (Ginebra), Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (TNT), and Allen Durham (Meralco), will headline the list of imports, bringing excitement to the court. Durham, a multi-Best Import awardee, is back with the Bolts, aiming for another title after their recent breakthrough in the PBA.
The opening night match will see the Meralco Bolts take on the Magnolia Hotshots, who were runners-up in last year’s Commissioner’s Cup. Hotshots coach Chito Victolero has a powerful squad, including a former NBA slam-dunk king, as they seek to dominate the new season.
Durham is determined to make his fourth PBA championship attempt count, stating, “I’m getting towards the end of my career, and I want to give the PBA one more shot and try to get a championship.”
