Norwood does a Chris Ross

AFTER Chris Ross, now it’s Gabe Norwood.

The veteran guard just renewed his contract with Rain or Shine as playing assistant coach as he now become an official part of Yeng Guiao’s coaching staff.

Norwood’s role as playing assistant coach of the Elasto Painters is good at least for a year.

He became the current active player who assumed such status after fellow guard Chris Ross also managed to dangle a similar deal with San Miguel.

But the 39-year-old Norwood, also once a pillar of the Gilas Pilipinas men’s team, has been a true blue Elasto Painters, having been with the franchise since 2008 when he was chosen by the team as the no. 1 overall pick in the draft.

Norwood just completed his 15th season with Rain or Shine, helping the team reached the semifinals of the ongoing PBA Philippine Cup – its first in five years – where he averaged 3.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.6 assists.

While he may now be a shadow of his old self, Norwood remains a steadying presence in a team that boasts of a young, promising roster.

“We have to keep Gabe and Beau (Belga) so they can keep on helping us in the team. Sila yung veteran leaders namin,” said Guiao of Norwood and fellow veteran Beau Belga following the conclusion of Rain or Shine’s season with a four-game sweep at the hands of defending champion San Miguel in their semifinals series.

Team governor Atty. Mamerto Mondragon and lead assistant Caloy Garcia witnessed Norwood signing his new contract as playing assistant coach. (RG)
