Meralco Bolts vs. New Taipei Kings: EASL Final Four Berth on the Line
The Meralco Bolts face the New Taipei Kings in a crucial East Asia Super League (EASL) Home and Away Season 2 matchup on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the University of Taipei. The winner secures the final Final Four spot in Macau (March 7-9).
Currently, the Bolts hold fourth place in Group B (2-3 record), while the Kings sit second (3-2). A Meralco victory would create a three-way tie with the Kings and Macau Black Bears (3-3), with the Bolts advancing due to superior quotient.
Despite a heartbreaking PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoff loss to Barangay Ginebra, the Bolts are determined. However, import Akil Mitchell is doubtful due to aggravated back spasms and a groin injury. His potential absence is a blow, as he’s averaged 25 points and 20 rebounds in the EASL.
“I hope he can (play),” said Coach Trillo.
The Bolts will rely on DJ Kennedy, naturalized player Ange Kouame, and Chris Newsome, who will join Gilas Pilipinas training camp after the game. “We still have a chance to win this game and end up in the Final Four,” said Newsome, who scored 22 points against Ginebra.
A significant advantage for Meralco is the likely absence of New Taipei star Jeremy Lin (hamstring injury). His brother, Joseph Lin, and import Kenny Manigault are expected to lead the Kings.
San Miguel Beermen Aim for Final Win Against Suwon KT
Meanwhile in South Korea, the winless San Miguel Beermen (0-5) play Suwon KT at the Sonicboom Arena. Missing key players June Mar Fajardo and CJ Perez (Gilas Pilipinas training), the Beermen aim to end their EASL campaign on a high note. Suwon KT (2-3), also out of Final Four contention, will feature two-time UAAP champion and Finals MVP JD Cagulangan.
