Marcio Lassiter took inspiration from a conversation with PBA legend Jimmy Alapag just hours before breaking one of the league’s most prestigious records. The 37-year-old San Miguel Beermen star surpassed Alapag’s long-standing record for the most three-point shots made in PBA history.
Lassiter appreciated the encouragement from the former MVP, who texted him on Saturday as Lassiter neared the milestone. “We talked briefly. He was grateful and proud of the accomplishment,” Lassiter said, reflecting on their conversation. Alapag, now an assistant coach with the Sacramento Kings, expressed his support as Lassiter closed in on becoming the PBA’s all-time three-point leader.
It didn’t take long for Lassiter to claim the title. During San Miguel’s dominant 131-82 victory over Barangay Ginebra at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Lassiter sank six three-pointers, far surpassing the three he needed to break Alapag’s record. By the end of the game, Lassiter’s total stood at 1,254 three-pointers.
Lassiter finished the game shooting 6-of-8 from beyond the arc and totaled 18 points, helping San Miguel secure a spot in the Governors’ Cup quarterfinals. He expressed humility, sharing that Alapag wished he could have been present to witness the record-breaking moment in person. “He wished he could be here,” said Lassiter, who played alongside Alapag in the original Smart Gilas Pilipinas team under coach Rajko Toroman.
“He’s full-on supporting from afar. He sent his best wishes and said hi to the family. He just told me to keep pushing the needle,” Lassiter added.
At halftime, PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial officially recognized Lassiter’s achievement, presenting him with the game ball. Joined by his wife and five children, Lassiter celebrated one of the most memorable milestones of his career.
