Jarin insists season good for Phoenix

THERE’S little to fret about on what should be a disappointing 48th PBA Philippine Cup campaign for Phoenix Super LPG.

In fact, coach Jamike Jarin believes his Fuel Masters’ campaign in the league’s two conferences for the season is fairly good enough, considering the circumstances.

“We overachieved, we underachieved, we did good, we did okay. That’s how I’d put it,” assessed Jarin, who first took over in an interim capacity from Topex Robinson in last season’s Governors’ Cup before formally assuming the team’s head coach title in October.

In that span, Jarin steered the team to the Governors’ Cup quarterfinals and the last Commissioner’s Cup semifinals, somewhat lessening the sting of Phoenix’s failure to get past the eliminations of the ongoing Philippine Cup.

Jarin readily pointed at the assortment of injuries that alternately sidelined Tyler Tio, Raul Soyud, RR Garcia, Sean Manganti and even Jason Perkins that prevented his side from playing with a full complement the entire conference.

“If we had gone further in the playoffs, there was a possibility Tyler and Manganti would come back, eh. Sayang,” bared Jarin. “Big difference talaga ‘yung Tyler Tio, Sean Manganti, plus the injuries to RR Garcia, Jason Perkins, Raul Soyud. They all missed a lot of games.”

The only thing Phoenix could do now, following its last game of the season against Blackwater Saturday, is to look forward.

“We got a few months to get it together. I’m sure by that time everybody’s gonna be healthy. Plus, the draft. We’re gonna get better and younger. Definitely we have a first rounder,” disclosed Jarin.

So I already had exit interviews with the players. Everybody agreed that after the game we’re gonna come back on the third of June,” added Jarin.

“We’re gonna do it slowly, three times a week on the first week, four times a week on the second week and then five times a week on the third. And then we’ll push it from there.”

In the meantime, Jarin has already reflected on the season that is about to end for his team. “It was a very good year for us. I’d say everybody knows we did well this season,” he said.(NC)
