FROM a 3-0 semis sweep by eventual champion San Miguel Beer last conference, Barangay Ginebra returns to action Friday, opening its PBA Philippine Cup campaign versus Rain or Shine at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Tip off is at 7:30 p.m., the kickoff of what is sort of a redemption tour for the Gin Kings on the heels of their humbling wipeout by the Beermen.
The Kings ride a tremendous desire for a strong conference start ranged against a Rain or Shine side now reeling from two straight losses.
Led by fresh recruits Rey Nambatac and James Yap, the E-Painters had solid stand versus TNT and Meralco but just couldn’t pull it off at the finish.
Coach Yeng Guiao’s troops were barely edged out by the Tropang Giga, 108-107, then dropped a 121-117 loss in extra time to the Bolts.
Those defeats firmed up Guiao’s belief that they have what it takes to compete with the best of them.
And they have a chance to show that again against the stacked team of coach Tim Cone led by Scottie Thompson, Christian Standhardinger, Japeth Aguilar and Jamie Malonzo.
The E-Painters are not hoping to just be competitive but finally nail a first “W.”
And it could be a dogfight.
Interesting is how Malonzo can help. Or is he still battling the trauma of the incident that became viral on social media.
For sure, Thompson, Standhardinger and the rest of the Gin Kings will be there to help him erase the memory of that harrowing experience.
A good start should be a good showing by the Kings in this all-Filipino tourney they won the last time during the PBA bubble in Clark.(SB)
