Guiao upbeat about E-Painter's Season 49 bid

YENG Guiao is banking on the recent gains Rain or Shine made as it embarks on its campaign in the Season 49 of the PBA.

The champion coach believes the team’s successful title run in the recent Kadayawan Festival in Davao and reaching the semifinals for the first time in five years last season serve as solid foundations in the Elasto Painters’ bid in the coming Governors’ Cup.

Rain or Shine completed a sweep of the annual, four-day tournament including a 138-116 blowout of reigning UAAP men’s basketball champion De La Salle.

“Maraming nangyari dun sa Davao. Of course, it was capped by a championship, pero sa tingin ko ang importante doon is the time we spent together. The time that we’re able to know each other better especially for the three rookies,” noted Guiao.

“Nag team building na rin kami doon sa Davao. At the same time, we’re also able to gel our rookies, bond with our rookies and introduced to them our culture, our philosophies. Maganda naman.”

The Elasto Painters signed up three rookies in first round picks Felix Lemetti and Caelang Tiongson as well as second round selection Francis Escandor.

Guiao sees the three new faces as capable and fit to Rain or Shine’s system, pieces which he felt could help the team’s cause for the entire season.

“Alam namin kung ano pa yung kulang namin. Alam din namin kung saan yung strengths namin,” said the 65-year-old mentor.

“Kaya in the off season, we tried to improve on those aspects as we aim to build a contender team.” (RG)
