THE Commissioner’s Cup losing semifinalists both face quick successive games in PBA Season 48 Philippine Cup, taking on each Sunday following their conference debuts Friday.
The Barangay Ginebra Kings and the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters clash at 6:15 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, coming from contrasting results.
Boosted by a pumped-up game from Jamie Malonzo, the Kings drubbed the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 113-107, while the Fuel Masters fell to a 124-120 toppling by the NorthPort Batang Pier in a high-scoring duel.
Definitely the big news Friday was Malonzo’s career-high 32-point sizzler, underscoring the fact that he has moved on from the recent controversy he got involved with.
In the post-game event after their win over ROS, Malonzo and coach Tim Cone talked about the game but declined to entertain further “non-basketball” queries.
“If I may say, Jamie found a sanctuary in practice and games. He’s back to his comfort zone with his teammates. So I think that’s really the key issue for him and it showed tonight in his game. He can put everything behind and just move forward,” said Cone.
“We’re actually really proud of Jamie and what he did tonight and how he came back to practice and how he let his game do the talking,” Cone said.
Malonzo was happy with his showing helping the Kings to a triumphant start in the season-ending tourney.
“(It’s) difficult to cancel out all the noise and go out there and perform and focus on the game. So I’m just happy to do what I did tonight and move forward,” said Malonzo.
For a follow-up, Malonzo and his teammates face the Phoenix team that actually did well too Friday night and just came up short in a fiery shootout versus NorthPort.
In fact, Jason Perkins and his teammates fired away 40 points in the fourth quarter.
Phoenix’s solid stand was marked by a 28-point job from Perkins backed by double-digit contributions from Tyler Tio (19), RJ Jazul (15), Ricci Rivero (13) and Ken Tuffin (11).(SB)
