Gilas ‘sixth man’ delivers anew

PHILIPPINE men’s basketball team coach Tim Cone acknowledged the great help provided by the ever supportive Filipino basketball fans during its opening game against Hong Kong in the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers on Thursday.

Cone noted how the Filipino crowd at the Tsuen Wan Stadium got Gilas Pilipinas all pumped-up during the second half of the game that allowed the team to finally pull away from the host country.

“Our crowd helped us gain some momentum, and we were lucky to get a run and take it through,” said the veteran mentor.

Gilas went on a 10-0 blast in the third quarter anchored on Justin Brownlee and Kai Sotto as the Filipinos broke the game open, 63-45.

Until that stretch came, the Filipinos were just sitting on a slim 41-37 lead at the half.

Cone said the cheering of the pro-Gilas crowd contributed to the crucial breakaway.

“We’ve seen this through the World Cup and everywhere we’ve gone. We always travel very well because we always have (the crowd). And that’s a big advantage that we have with the other teams,” added the Gilas coach. “No matter where we play, there’s a crowd that is behind us and cheering.

“We know they spent their hard-earned money to watch the game. We truly appreciate them. I thought they were the reasons we came out there in the second half, made some nice plays, and they really got cheering, and it kinda lifted our spirits and we got some momentum. That keyed our runaway in the third quarter.”

Gilas returned to the country on Friday and will be back in the loving arms of Filipino cage fans Sunday when it hosts Chinese Taipei at the Philsports Arena for its second and final game in the opening window of the Asia Cup qualifiers.
