MERALCO can take it from no less than Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao.
June Mar Fajardo will still be the major stumbling block for the Bolts if they are to dethrone the San Miguel Beermen and win a first PBA Philippine Cup championship, according to Guiao.
The veteran mentor certainly knows what he’s talking about as his Rain or Shine Elasto Painters were swept by the Beermen in their own best-of-seven semis series to clinch the first berth in the title series.
The seven-time MVP averaged 17.4 points, 14.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assist in the 4-0 sweep.
“When you want to get the championship or win a championship, sa pagka-constitute ng San Miguel team, parating kay June Mar. So kailangang makahanap ka ng katapat ni June Mar,” said Guiao.
Rain or Shine did try to slow down the 6-foot-10 giant by matching him up against veteran Beau Belga and rookie big man Keith Datu to no avail.
“Ang hirap maghanap ng physical specimen na puwede mong itapat sa kanya,” Guiao admitted. “Kapag binagsakan mo siya ng bola, may 70 percent ka na efficiency rate or kailangan mong dumoble team. Kapag dumoble team ka naman, dahil ang gagaling ng nakapaligid sa kanya, yun naman ang magiging problema mo. So it’s really picking your poison.”
Meralco survived Barangay Ginebra in their own best-of-seven semis series that went the full route as Raymond Almazan, the undersized Cliff Hodge, and rookie Brandon Bates took their turns and held their own against the Twin Tower of Christian Standhardinger and Japeth Aguilar.
Now Almazan and Co. will have their hands full again trying to limit Fajardo.
“I think everything is really created by the presence of June Mar on offense and defense,” Guiao offered. “Kung gusto mong makarating sa finals or mag-champion, kailangan may solusyon ka sa problema.”
Game 1 of the finals between San Miguel and Meralco is set on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. (RG)
