BENNIE Boatwright expects an even tougher battle for San Miguel when it tries to close out Magnolia on Wednesday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals.
After surviving a huge endgame scare from the Hotshots in a 108-98 win in Game 5, Boatwright knows the Beermen have to be ready on what their opponents will bring on the table come Valentine’s Day at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“We expect it to be a tough game” he said about Game 6 of the title series, which San Miguel leads, 3-2. “We’ll go out there and be ready.”
Thanks to the hot hands of Jericho Cruz, San Miguel aborted a late meltdown which saw Magnolia climb back from as much as a 14-point deficit in the final six minutes to threaten at 99-96 with 74 seconds remaining.
Cruz hit the last of his eight three pointers and Boatwright nailed two crucial free throws as the Beermen answered back behind a telling 9-2 endgame run to clinch the win.
Boatwright finished with 21 points, six rebounds, and four assists as he rebounded back from his lowest output in the final of 16 points during San Miguel’s 96-85 loss in Game 4.
Now he’s a victory away from winning his first PBA championship as San Miguel eyes its 29th franchise title overall.
Boatwright hopes San Miguel fans will come in droves and support the Beermen in their quest for history.
“We love all the fans, they gave us a lot of energy out there. I definitely feel about them (when) playing. It’s exciting going out there and playing,” said the import.(RG)
