BLACKWATER used a well laid-out gameplan for a strong start to hurdle Converge, 90-78, Wednesday and stretch its unbeaten start in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Christian David and RK Ilagan took turns leading the offense while Troy Rosario, Bradwyn Guinto and Tyrus Hill anchored the defense as the Bossing raced to an early 30-14 lead, which got stretched to a high of 70-35 in the third period.
The FiberXers kept on plodding on and managed to trim the gap behind the exploits of Alec Stockton, Schonny Winston, and Justin Arana, but time was simply not on their side.
In the end, Blackwater has now duplicated its 3-0 start to the 2019 Commissioner’s Cup and coach Jeffrey Cariaso mainly credited the record to its defense on Converge’s main threats Justin Arana and Alec Stockton.
“We had a gameplan on how we want to defend Justin and I meant what I said, he’s a hard cover, so we knew it was gonna be important to defend well,” said Cariaso.
“Alec, I think, is playing the best in his career so far right now. He’s patient, he’s taking his time. I call him pesky and persistent and now that he’s developing his shot and being more consistent, he’s even more a phenomenal player,” added Cariaso.
“So we had a gameplan on how we want to defend and again tonight I’m happy with the way we came out and defended those two in particular.”
Stockton still finished with 24 points and Arana 18, but last year’s Best Rookie went scoreless in the two middle quarters and 10 of his points came when the outcome is already irreversible.
Winston had a career-high 22 points despite scoring only four in the first 24 minutes of play. (NC)
