Beermen try to stay clean, Dyip determined to make the playoffs

HIS team’s unblemished record is not enough to satisfy coach Jorge Gallent, especially when he feels his San Miguel Beer squad still needs to work on certain aspects of its game.

“When we play games, we try to improve and try to get better on things that we have to get better at,” Gallent has said after his Beermen jacked up its record to 4-0 last Friday.

“So these four games medyo our transition defense was not that good,” added Gallent. “But it’s getting there. So we just have to practice it more and see what happens.”

Preventing the other team from scoring transition points is indeed one factor that should decide whether SMB can win as expected over surprising Terrafirma Wednesday in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The Dyip are still on a high after pulling off a man-sized 91-85 upset win over Barangay Ginebra just last Sunday that boosted their record to 4-3 and further stoked their drive to a very rare quarterfinals stint.

Coach Johnedel Cardel and his charges can safely realize a last eight appearance for the very first time should they add at least two more wins in their last four games.

“We can’t relax even though four wins na kami,” said Javi Gomez de Liano, who was among those instrumental in the shocker over Ginebra.

“We know that we need to get at least two more to be safe. So, in our next games we’re gonna take it one game at a time and continue to play for each other, play for our coaches and try to get those wins,” added Gomez de Liano.

It sure would be tough. Aside from SMB, Terrafirma still has to contend with Rain or Shine on Saturday and NorthPort on April 24 before winding up the eliminations against Magnolia on May 3.

Cardel is not one to lack in optimism, however. “Malay natin, bilog ang bola,” he said.

“As long as tuloy lang ang pagtutulungan sa loob and we continue to play as a team, especially sa defense, and within the system baka makasilat ulit,” added Cardel.

Underestimating Terrafirma is something Gallent warns his team about. “That team is playing well, and their three losses were kind of tight,” he pointed out.

“So we cannot be overconfident with that team,” added Gallent. “We would just have to play hard and play our usual game and not be complacent.” (NC)
