MIGHTY San Miguel Beer is on course to achieving something that has never been done in league history as the Beermen resume quest for glory in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
No team has ever won a PBA crown via a sweep of the entire playoffs.
On a sizzling run from back to the elims, the Beermen are two wins away from achieving that feat and two wins away from reclaiming the Commissioner’s Cup crown.
Coach Jorge Gallent and his troops are bent on making it three-to-nil versus the beleaguered Magnolia Hotshots as they slug it out in Game 3 of the race-to-four showdown at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday.
Game time is at 7:30 p.m. with a win for the Beermen sending them to the brink of a record-setting playoffs sweep – and the cusp of a 29th league crown.
But for Gallent, what matters is the championship.
“The sweep is not even on our minds. Our team is thinking how to get four games,” said Gallent, a multi-titled coach in the PBL and now two wins away from a first PBA crown in only his second conference as the SMB head coach.
So focused are the Beermen on the task at hand as shown by their dominant effort in the first two games – emphatic victories keeping the fire of their perfect run in the playoffs after their 127-122 quarterfinals disposal of Rain or Shine and a 3-0 blanking of Barangay Ginebra in the semifinals.
Gallent has been a picture of poise and composure as was his demeanor in a spat with Calvin Abueva during Game 2.
Extinguished was the fire of Magnolia’s own run that made them the playoffs top seed.
And if they couldn’t find a way to at least be competitive in the series in Game 3, coach Chito Victolero and his chargers could well kiss their bid goodbye.
For it has been all SMB show in the Beermen’s 103-95 juggernaut in Game 1 followed by a 109-85 romp in Game 2.
The Hotshots have had no answer so far to Bennie Boatwright’s magnificence and the solid support efforts of June Mar Fajardo, CJ Perez, Marcio Lassiter and Jericho Cruz.(SB)
