DEATH 5 or Death 15?
Whatever they’ve got at their arsenal, the San Miguel Beermen are expected to utilize these the fullest possible as they take a shot at a sweep versus the beleaguered title holder Barangay Ginebra Kings.
They try to deliver the last rites on the Kings and claim a spot in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup best-of-seven title playoffs versus the winner in the other semis face-off pitting Magnolia and Phoenix.
A possibility is a double sweep that will quickly arrange a title showdown between the Beermen and the Hotshots.
But both the Beermen and the Hotshots are not entertaining thoughts of an easy kill in Game 3 Sunday at the MOA Arena in Pasay City.
At 2-0, coach Jorge Gallent and his troops still brace for a tough grind in their 6:30 tiff against an equally proven side in Barangay Ginebra.
Firstly, the Beermen barely escaped with a 92-90 win in Game One then needed a strong finishing kick to outfight the Kings, 106-96, in Game Two.
On the flip side, the Beermen are convinced they’ve got what it takes to battle and beat the best of their rivals could offer.
Gallent calls his team as the “Death 15,” honoring the entirety of the squad that is now on cusp of a finals return.
“Everybody is capable. There’s no ‘Death 5’ here. It’s ‘Death 15.’ Everybody is good here. They wouldn’t be here if they weren’t good,” said Gallent.
But he can’t deny there’s a lethal first group against whom coach Tim Cone and the Kings couldn’t find an answer to.
Bennie Boatwright was an unstoppable force in a 38-point sizzler the last time. Then there were the solid efforts of June Mar Fajardo, CJ Perez and Marcio Lassiter.
The Beermen are a wrecking ball even in the absence of Terrence Romeo and Vic Manuel.
Still, the Kings can’t be counted out.
Fireworks are still expected with the never-say-die Kings likely to leave everything on the floor in an effort to stop the Beermen. And don’t forget too Ginebra’s Mythical Sixth Man possibly coming into play in their win or go-home game. (SB)
