WITHOUT fanfare, first round pick BJ Andrade finally played his debut game for Converge in the PBA Philippine Cup over the weekend.
The rookie guard went scoreless in 13 minutes of play, but grabbed three rebounds and an assist in the FiberXers’ 106-75 loss at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Andrade was the no. 10 overall pick by Converge in the last draft despite the former Ateneo player coming off an ACL injury that kept him out for the entire Commissioner’s Cup.
Coach Aldin Ayo was grateful to see Andrade finally playing again, although the 5-foot-9 guard still has a long way to go.
Ayo noted Andrade has yet to get his playing rhythm after being out of action for a long while.
“Physically, he’s ready, pero yung rhythm niya wala pa sa timing,” said the Converge coach.
There were instances too, where the rookie player appeared hesitant, an obvious sign he still has to fully grasp the team system and the tendencies of his teammates.
“There were situations where he could have taken the shots, but gave it up because he wanted to create for his teammates,” Ayo said.
But the potential is certainly there for the nephew of two-time MVP and Converge deputy coach Danny Ildefonso.
“Nakita mo na yung laro niya na he’s just learning to execute and he’s going to do the intangibles,” said Ayo about the Ateneo stalwart.
“He got the shots. One or two yata. But those are good shots, hindi lang pumasok.”
At the moment, Andrade still plays under restricted minutes as per the suggestion of the FiberXers’ strength and conditioning coaches, according to Ayo, but the three-week respite for the coming All-Star festivities and the Lenten break are good enough for the rookie to continue getting back in shape.
“Hopefully, makuha niya na yung timing niya,” said the Converge coach. (RG)
