MANILA, Philippines — Sanya Lopez became emotional while recalling her first meeting with the lolas (grandmothers) who were comfort women during World War II. Her “Pulang Araw” co-star Ashley Ortega shared that their initial encounter with the lolas was equally moving before filming the ongoing war series on GMA-7.
Sanya and Ashley attended the Pandesal Forum on October 24 at Kamuning Bakery in Quezon City, discussing the plight of comfort women during World War II. Sanya, who plays Teresita Borromeo, a vaudeville star from a wealthy family, expressed her deep empathy for the lolas’ struggles.
Sanya recounted meeting two lolas at Lila Pilipina, where Lola Isang’s story profoundly impacted her. Lola Isang expressed her longing for the happiness she sees in today’s youth, highlighting the stark contrast between their experiences and those of the wartime generation.
Ashley, who portrays Sister Manuela Apolonio, a nun forced into being a comfort woman, echoed Sanya’s sentiments. She emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the atrocities faced by comfort women and the need for justice for the few survivors left.
“Pulang Araw,” airing on GMA-7 after “24 Oras,” continues to be a top-streamed show on Netflix Philippines since its premiere on July 29. The series aims to shed light on the untold stories of comfort women and the sacrifices of Filipinos during World War II.
